this place seems rather spooky in a weird way. Its a shame the town is obliterated. It was a nice little town in the old days.

Mural Mosaic--almost done!

A couple more hours of work, and I'm almost done. There are still a few glitches to be worked out, but nothing too major.
Once it's done, the panel goes back to Edmonton, where the mural will be assembled at the West Edmonton Mall in June. Then the panels will be auctioned off.
I have no illusions that a big stinky badger is going to be a top seller, but it's all for a good cause.
Mural Mosaic--Marching on!
In the top picture, I've fleshed out some more details on the badger, and started toning down that crazy orange colour.
At this point, I take another digital picture, and bring it in to Photoshop to test out my next steps with colour and shading. That's the lower picture, after some digital scribbling.
The background still isn't where I want it to be, but I think I can start finishing off the badger.
Your badger fact for today: A badger's burrow is called a 'sett'.
Mural Mosaic--The initial sketch
The picture starts to take shape. I chose the American badger (
Taxidea taxus), as two subspecies (
jeffersonii and
jacksoni) are endangered in Canada. And of course, because I needed something stripey to match the panel.
I started by doing some digital sketches on top of the scanned panel to work out the composition. Once I had an image that preserved the important features of the panel, I roughed out the badger's features and colours in gouache.
Next: refining the badger and painting the background.
